The Effect of Intravenous Lidocaine on Blood Pressure and Heart Rate during Electroconvulsive Therapy

Abstract
We evaluated the clinical effectiveness of lidocaine to control the sinus tachycardia and increase in arterial pressure induced by electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
Each of 20 patients, ASA physical status I-III, was studied after pretreatment of 10 patients with lidocaine (1 mg/kg) and saline solution (control).
During control studies, arterial blood pressure and heart rate increased significantly in all patients (p<0.05).
Pretreatment with lidocaine also increased arterial blood pressure and heart rate significantly but the degree of increment and the length of scizure were reduced.
We concluded that lidocaine effectively controls the arrhythmia.
